La notion d’âge pulmonaire (AP) a été évoquée dès les années 1980 par Morris et Temple. Son objectif est de placer le fumeur face à la réalité d’un AP, qui, dans certains cas, peut être supérieur à son âge chronologique. Il prendrait alors connaissance que le fait de fumer accélère le vieillissement prématuré de ses poumons.Cette démarche permet-elle d’aider le fumeur à appréhender la signification de vieillissement prématuré des poumons et le risque de dégradation de la fonction respiratoire ? Cette information peut-elle améliorer la motivation au sevrage tabagique chez des fumeurs actifs ? Ce concept pourrait-il favoriser l’arrêt du tabagisme ?
