Il nostro lavoro fa parte di uno studio cartografico nella regione di Virunga, che è caratterizzata da affioramenti di roccia vulcanica. Questi ci hanno permesso di avere un approccio cartografico alla regione di Goma e ai suoi dintorni. Questo ha portato alla creazione di una mappa di rischio della città di Goma, tenendo conto di tutti i dati acquisiti sul campo. Così, sono stati identificati diversi tipi di deformazioni: (fratture, faglie, tunnel, ecc.), sono stati analizzati e infine mappati. Lo studio di mappatura ha rivelato due fratture principali del vulcano Nyiragongo e delle sue ramificazioni, una delle quali corre da nord-est della città verso il lago Kivu.Ci ha commosso il modo in cui è costruita la città di Goma, poiché le fondamenta della città sono basate su fratture, crepe e faglie; le ramificazioni della frattura principale corrono lungo la città fino al lago Kivu senza che nessuno se ne accorga.
