The semblance hypothesis explains how associative memory can result from the semblance of activity from a set of presynaptic terminals at different orders of neurons. Synaptic semblance and the concurrent spread of excitatory postsynaptic potentials through the functional LINKs result in the activation of a network of neurons contributing to network semblance for memory retrieval. In addition, the hypothesis is used to explain different physiological and pathological conditions. Some experimental evidence for the presence of functional LINKs is shown and future investigations are discussed. 3
