Die kryptogene Zirrhose stellt das Endstadium einiger okkulter chronischer Lebererkrankungen dar, wobei die NASH eine der wichtigsten Grunderkrankungen ist, die für diese Fälle verantwortlich sind. In einigen Studien wurde nach einem Zusammenhang zwischen kryptogener Zirrhose und NASH gesucht, indem das 'metabolische Profil' der beiden Gruppen verglichen wurde, wobei Diabetes mellitus und Adipositas im Vordergrund standen. Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Prävalenz von Risikofaktoren für NASH bei Patienten mit kryptogener Zirrhose in Porto Alegre, Südbrasilien, zu ermitteln, um einen möglichen kausalen Zusammenhang herzustellen. Die Studie wurde zwischen 2008 und 2010 in der gastroenterologischen Abteilung des ISCMPA durchgeführt. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die Ergebnisse bei der Bewertung des möglichen ätiologischen Zusammenhangs zwischen NASH und kryptogener Zirrhose einen Rückschluss zulassen, da eine Übereinstimmung im glykämischen Profil und ein Unterschied im Durchschnittsalter festgestellt wurde, was auf eine für das Fortschreiten der Krankheit benötigte Zeit hindeutet.
