A oxi-combustão estabeleceu-se como uma das tecnologias de combustão mais atractivas. O combustível reciclado e os gases de combustão são queimados com ar enriquecido com oxigénio, resultando num gás de combustão composto principalmente porCO2 e vapor de água. A oxicombustão pode oferecer vantagens como o aumento da eficiência, a redução das emissões, a melhoria da estabilidade da temperatura e da transferência de calor, o aumento da produtividade, a melhoria das características de ignição e a redução dos riscos. A destilação, a adsorção e as membranas são três tecnologias que foram desenvolvidas para responder a elevadas concentrações de oxigénio para melhorar a eficiência da combustão. Uma única passagem através das membranas pode aumentar a concentração de oxigénio no ar em 35% e uma passagem dupla através das membranas pode aumentar a concentração em 50%. O aumento do fluxo de oxigénio melhora ligeiramente o processo de combustão e aumenta ligeiramente a temperatura máxima dentro da zona de reacção.
