Au fil du temps, toute structure architecturale nécessite certaines mesures de rénovation. De nombreux tunnels en Europe centrale, et notamment en Allemagne, ont plus de 100 ans et ne sont plus exploitables. Ils ne sont plus conformes à la réglementation et aux prescriptions en vigueur et doivent être adaptés aux normes de sécurité actuelles. C’est pourquoi ils nécessitent d’importants travaux de rénovation. Ces tunnels existants ont été construits selon différentes méthodes, par exemple la méthode anglaise, autrichienne ou allemande. Celle-ci est déterminante pour le choix des mesures de rénovation appropriées. Les mesures et les méthodes de construction pour la rénovation et la modernisation des tunnels doivent être continuellement adaptées aux dernières avancées techniques. En outre, les entreprises doivent se conformer à la fois aux réglementations nationales et aux exigences légales des autorités centrales, telles que l’Union européenne.
