Luis Coloma escribió esta versión de Ratón Pérez hacia 1894 cuando le pidieron un cuento para el futuro rey Alfonso XIII de España, que entonces tenía ocho años, y al que se le había caído un diente. Así Coloma retomó la célebre historia del Ratoncito, protagonizada, esta vez, por el Rey Buby, apodo usado por la reina María Cristina de Habsburgo para llamar a su hijo Alfonso XIII.El personaje del Ratón Pérez es conocido como Ratoncito Pérez en Hispanoamérica, excepto en algunas regiones de México, Chile y Perú, donde se le llama también el Ratón de los dientes. Un origen probable del personaje y del hada que lo visita en las diferentes versiones del relato, proviene de un cuento francés del siglo XVIII de la baronesa d’Aulnoy titulado: El buen ratoncito.
