Der sozio-politische Raum Burundis bleibt aufgrund seiner historischen Vergangenheit ein fruchtbarer Boden für Identitätsunterschiede. In der Zeit der Monarchie gab es keine politisch-ethnischen Konflikte, es herrschte Homogenität und sozialer Zusammenhalt, ein reiner Widerspruch zu den Jahren 1965, 1972, 1988 und 1993, die von sozialer Zerrissenheit geprägt waren. Man fragt sich, wie die kulturell und sprachlich homogene, integrative burundische Gesellschaft eine identitäre Kategorisierung entwickelt hat, ob das Zusammenleben der Burundier nicht irritierende Erinnerungen und Frustrationen einfriert, die zu politischer Gewalt führen können. Dieses Projekt zielt auf die politische Elite, die Mobilisierung der Identität (Ethnizität) und die Gewalt in Burundi ab. Die politische Mobilisierung basiert hier auf der ethnischen Identität, die durch politische Forderungen entsteht, bis sie die sozialen Strukturen durchdringt. Die Strategie der politischen Akteure besteht in der Verschärfung ethnischer Konflikte und der Dichotomisierung der sozialen Beziehungen. Die dominante Strategie der Akteure besteht darin, schmerzhafte Erinnerungen hervorzuholen, die die Massen irritieren können.
