Mechanika mediów ciągłych (CMM), jak wskazuje jej tytuł, opiera się na głównej hipotezie o ciągłości materii i interesuje się badaniem ciał stałych lub płynnych poddawanych nagłym zmianom kształtu w różnych skalach.W pierwszej części zajmiemy się matematycznymi przypomnieniami notacji tensorów, następnie w drugiej i trzeciej części przedstawiamy bezpośrednie zastosowanie pierwszej części, są to odpowiednio dwa tensory naprężenia i odkształcenia. Jeżeli zależność jest liniowa pomiędzy naprężeniem i naprężeniem tensora w małej skali, to mówimy o zachowaniu sprężystym materiałów i jest to tematem czwartego rozdziału (Teoria izotropowej i anizotropowej sprężystości liniowej).
