This magnificent study by a Canadian linguist analyzes XXth Century’s French, American, and German popular songs translated from one language to the other ones. Michèle Laliberté shows the importance of each translator’s social and historical contexts.Ce livre, qui se situe au croisement de la traductologie et des Cultural Studies, est une analyse formelle, stylistique et socioculturelle de chansons populaires traduites en France, en Allemagne et aux États-Unis de 1910 à 1960. Lanalyse cumulative des traductions de chansons fait ressortir la charge affective présente lors du transfert de sens dune langue à lautre et révèle aussi que cette affectivité est liée au climat sociopolitique et culturel prévalant entre deux nations à un moment donné de lhistoire. Les résultats mettent en lumière la nature fluctuante des émotions ressenties par les traducteurs envers la culture source : ils dévoilent plusieurs façons de traduire, qui semblent correspondre aux étapes du développement culturel élaborées par le psychanalyste Pascal Baudry. À partir des résultats de cette recherche, lauteure réussit à nous entraîner bien au-delà de la chanson traduite. 10
