Na południu centralnego regionu Kuby znajduje się jeden z głównych obszarów górskich kraju: góry Guamuhaya, często nazywane El Escambray. Ten system orograficzny, o długości 80 km, zorientowany ze wschodu na zachód, stanowi ważny ośrodek ewolucji fauny i flory kubańskiej (Samek, 1973; Iturralde-Vinent, 1988). Fauna pająków, która zamieszkuje Góry Guamuhaya, w południowo-środkowym regionie wyspy Kuba, składa się z 239 gatunków należących do ośmiu rzędów i 55 rodzin, z których najbardziej zróżnicowane są Araneae (194 gatunki, 40 rodzin) i Opiliones (20 gatunków, siedem rodzin). Do najbardziej interesujących elementów należy 66 lokalnych endemizmów, z których część ogranicza się do jednej jaskini. Gaucelmus augustinus spider Keyserling, 1884 (Nesticidae) stanowi nowy rekord dla fauny Kuby. Po raz pierwszy odnotowano tu wiele gatunków dla Guamuhaya.
