All of these poems have appeared in magazines and anthologies published between 2001 and 2011. Although I did produce an earlier, less inclusive edition of Out Of The Walled Garden a few years ago, this new edition includes all of my previously published pieces.I’ve largely neglected these poems for the last decade. After the death of my late wife, Karen, in 2010, I lost the heart to continue working in this vein, but now, putting this collection together properly, I’ve finally found a little of that lost enthusiasm. As I’ve worked through each piece, I’ve also put together some brief notes about the background or thoughts associated with the poem, and I think that this jogging of old memories is important. Over time we lose sight of the people that we once were, traveling further from our source, leaving a trail that slowly becomes overgrown with the weeds of forgetfulness, and we should, I think, try to keep our paths clear so that we can, if we choose to, retrace a few of our steps.Over the summer I edited a memoir that my father wrote before memory loss took its toll on his abilities, and I wonder, perhaps, if that has made me feel a little nostalgic. If that is the case, then I’m glad of it. It’s been good to reminisce and revisit old thoughts. Some of these thoughts and memories are, of course, painful, but in working on these poems I think that some of those sharper points have become a little duller. It’s actually been fun, and I’m all for that.

    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • A Solitude Of Stars
Clive Gilson / Clive L Gilson
A Solitude of Stars is disturbing and breathtaking in equal measure. It could be called a science-fiction dystopia, but I think the book goes much deeper than that. What interested me very much was how to tell the story of the Apparat and Dirigiste societies ranging across our local planetary system seeking peace by waging war to achieve it - much as we do today - while also we...
