Desde a sua independência em 1960, a República Democrática do Congo foi e continua a ser objeto de várias crises que levaram à criação de três missões das Nações Unidas. A primeira missão foi conduzida de 14 de julho de 1960 a 30 de junho de 1964, durante a crise congolesa, com o mandato de proteger o país contra agressões externas. Na sua 873ª reunião, o Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas, através da Resolução 143, solicitou à Bélgica que retirasse as suas tropas, autorizando o envio de 20 000 soldados da paz que levaram a cabo operações robustas durante as quais as Nações Unidas perderam 109 soldados da paz e assistiram à morte do Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas, Dag Hammarsk Jöld, quando este se encontrava numa missão de negociação em Katanga. Como acabámos de ver, concordarão connosco que a ONUC, a MONUC e a MONUSCO estiveram e continuam a estar envolvidas nas questões geopolíticas e geoestratégicas das missões de manutenção da paz da ONU na República Democrática do Congo, sobre as quais saberão mais neste trabalho.
