During a traumatic time in my life as I was coping with the onset of an anxiety disorder. I had intrusive thoughts. I couldn’t stop thinking things like 'I am a piece of shit,' 'I am a monster,' 'I am so stupid,' etc. To counter these thoughts, I wrote poetry. Out of this came a writing experiment that focuses on the first person plural pronoun 'we,' and 'us.' 'I am stupid' became 'WE are stupid,' which was funny and meaningful: If humanity can’t be reduced to 'stupid,' then neither could I.
