Eles são uma garantia de valores de abrangência universal. O objetivo é garantir o mínimo para a vida humana ser digna e respeitada segundo as próprias liberdades. Segundo a Organizações das Nações Unidas (ONU), os direitos humanos significam a garantia de proteção às pessoas. Isso abrange as ações (ou falta delas) por parte do Estado que possam pôr em risco a dignidade da vida humana. Basicamente, os direitos humanos são o direito à livre expressão (opinião e religião), direito à saúde básica, à educação (alfabetização, sobretudo) e a trabalho digno.
