Na RDC, apesar de todos os esforços envidados com os parceiros para promover a utilização de mosquiteiros impregnados, o paludismo continua a ser um importante problema de saúde pública devido à sua elevada morbilidade e mortalidade, especialmente entre as crianças e as mulheres grávidas. O estudo prospetivo da problemática da utilização de redes mosquiteiras tratadas com inseticida para prevenir a malária em crianças dos 0 aos 5 anos de idade, utilizando um método de inquérito, teve como objetivo avaliar o nível de conhecimentos, as atitudes e as práticas domésticas relacionadas com a utilização de redes mosquiteiras, e identificar os factores socioculturais e económicos associados à baixa ou à não utilização de redes mosquiteiras em agregados familiares com crianças com menos de 5 anos de idade, a fim de propor soluções. O estudo envolveu 375 agregados familiares com crianças com idades compreendidas entre os 0 e os 5 anos. Os principais resultados foram os seguintes -97,6% dos chefes de família inquiridos tinham ouvido falar de malária, 60,2% pensavam que os mosquitos se encontravam em água estagnada, 95,7% sabiam que os mosquitos picam e 93% estavam conscientes das vantagens de usar uma rede mosquiteira.
