O lago Edouard, situado no Parque Nacional do Virunga, atravessou três períodos desde a sua existência: o período de renascimento, o período de impasse (período de guerra e/ou de rebelião) e o período de reabilitação. Durante o período de reabilitação, o parque continuou a ser ocupado por vários grupos armados: coupeurs des routes, mai mai, FDLR, etc. A exploração petrolífera no Parque Nacional de Virunga foi dividida pelo governo da RDC em 5 blocos confiados, desde 2009, a várias empresas: Total, ENI, Shel e SOCO (Reino Unido). As licenças de exploração cobriam 58% da superfície do parque, apesar de a lei congolesa proibir qualquer tipo de exploração em Virunga. O lago Edouard albergava 29.500 hipopótamos e 28 espécies de anfíbios, sendo o lago mais rico de África e da RDC. Atualmente, estas espécies tendem a desaparecer devido a várias actividades humanas no lago. Devido às externalidades negativas da RDC, esta exploração está a provocar um derrame de petróleo e está na origem da guerra da água, uma vez que o Lago Edward é a nascente do Nilo Branco e do Nilo Azul, que desaguam no Mediterrâneo.
