Данное исследование представляет собой междисциплинарную работу, которая опирается на литературу, культурологию, философию и политику, чтобы изучить репрезентацию культурной инаковости в трех избранных современных американских романах: Plowing the Dark (2000) Ричарда Пауэрса, Terrorist (2006) Джона Апдайка и Point Omega (2010) Дона ДеЛилло. Используя теорию ориентализма Эдварда Саида и постмодернистские мысли Жака Лакана, Славоя Жижека и Жана Бодрийяра в качестве подтеорий, эта книга строит представление о западной ориенталистской и неоориенталистской репрезентации (репрезентациях) арабского исламского мира. Порядок этих романов, независимо от их хронологии, формулирует три ориенталистские репрезентации, которые говорят о личном восприятии каждым автором Востока и Запада в контексте трех различных политических событий: Кризис с заложниками в Иране (1979), террористические атаки 11 сентября и война с Ираком (2003). Рассматривая три выбранных романа в рамках ориенталистского дискурса и изучая их отражение в постмодернистском американском обществе, исследование рассматривает различные стратегии ориенталистской (неправильной) репрезентации, обусловленные американским постмодернизмом.
