This book is a reflection on the need for a better way forward for the human race. A new more robust morality to guide us and frame our decisions. Because if we don’t very quickly find a better way we will end up in a very bad and dark place. We all have faults. I admit to many. I also recognise I write from the inside and as part of the elite I’m critiquing here. But that does give me access and understanding. We need to ask ourselves over and over, what is right for all of us, not just me? For the ’We’ and not just the ’I’.Every day in newspapers, on television and online we see things happening that horrify us. Many of these things show us that there is no universal desire for democracy, freedom, independence, equality and decency as we have always understood them. The global debt crisis of 82/83, book burnings on our streets, Black Wednesday in the UK, 9/11, the banking collapse of 2007/08, Covid 19 and its consequent lockdowns, Ayatollah Khomeini’s return to Iran and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine are just a few of the events that have shaken our faith in our governments, their weak responses, in the status quo, and, yes, maybe in democracy itself. This book is my attempt to make some sense of how we got here, but more importantly to map a way forward.
