La produzione di materiali ecocompatibili è innescata principalmente dal problema ambientale dei compositi a base di petrolio e dalla necessità di ottenere materiali con le proprietà desiderate. Una delle strategie più efficaci per migliorare le proprietà e la biodegradabilità dei materiali compositi è la sostituzione del riempimento sintetico con fibre naturali. Il chitosano è una fibra naturale che possiede eccellenti proprietà meccaniche e termiche. È stato utilizzato come rinforzo nei compositi plastici, anche se non è così diffuso come le fibre sintetiche. In generale, l’incompatibilità tra matrice polimerica e fibra è uno dei principali inconvenienti nella produzione di compositi polimerici, a causa della diversa polarità tra fibre naturali e matrici polimeriche. Per mitigare il problema dell’adesione, si ottiene un miglioramento dell’adesione dell’interfaccia matrice-riempitivo attraverso la modifica chimica, per mezzo di un trattamento superficiale del riempitivo o di un agente di accoppiamento.
