In this study, we explore the doctrine, thoughts, and insightful advice that Jigoro Kano brought to the world. Unfortunately, how often have we encountered on social media images of Jigoro Kano accompanied by a short phrase or proverb he never actually uttered? Quite frequently. However, Kano did indeed express his thoughts, yet they are rarely mentioned or deeply analysed. Many people talk about Jigoro Kano without providing sources, leading to further confusion. A reputable work should, at the very least, cite the source, date, and author of the writing. This book seeks to address these aspects with reliable sources and a verifiable bibliography. The historical archives department of the International Kano Ryu School holds a wealth of material, which we make available in this book to raise awareness of the man who was undoubtedly a master ahead of his time. Kano laid the foundations not only for modern Budo but also for a unique mode of thought aimed at improving the individual’s ability to contribute more effectively to society. We have divided the book into 35 texts, proverbs, pieces of advice, etc., arranged chronologically from 1915 to 1931. Some are brief, others more extensive, but all hold great value when examined in detail. Kano discusses various topics such as life, social values, friendship, time, the qualities of an ideal teacher, the spirit of effort, the pursuit of truth, honesty, as well as invaluable advice for judokas, and more. Each piece is accompanied by a brief commentary and analysis aimed at highlighting Kano’s doctrine. The International Kano Ryu School specialises in studying the most obscure and forgotten aspects of judo and jujutsu, as well as the work of Jigoro Kano, as evidenced by over 27 books published in different languages and distributed in more than 70 countries.
