Em 1885, Elizabeth Cady Stanton afirmou que 'a história mostra que a degradação moral da mulher se deve mais a superstições teológicas do que a todas as outras influências juntas'. Stanton passou da superstição religiosa para ideias racionais baseadas em factos científicos. Ao longo da sua vida, procurou, sem sucesso, uma religião em que homens e mulheres fossem vistos como iguais. À medida que foi envelhecendo, tornou-se mais radical na sua oposição à religião organizada. Ao aproximar-se do seu 80º aniversário, lançou um projeto de reinterpretação e crítica dos textos bíblicos, recrutando um pequeno comité de mulheres para a ajudar. O primeiro volume de The Woman’s Bible (A Bíblia da Mulher) foi publicado em 1895, recebendo uma receção maioritariamente hostil. Muitos dentro do movimento de sufrágio feminino reagiram negativamente ao livro, temendo que ele diminuísse os seus apoiantes. Apesar da controvérsia, o livro tornou-se um best-seller. Críticas mordazes como as de Stanton e reflexões reconstrutivas como as de Irigaray caracterizaram a filosofia feminista da religião com um conjunto complexo de relações.
