London Journal / London Poem is an account of the author's thinking & seeing while on a trip to London to visit son & daughter-in-law & to travel with them & his own partner, to Berlin & Barcelona. It is an amusing calibration of self-consciousness, speculation, stereotypes & detail, reflection and discovery. Thoughtful-and yet forgetful, easily distracted, hardly there sometimes-Ken Bolton's is a lyrical figure limned against the harsh outlines, the stark colours, of the Adelaide art world, adding a word here, a thought there, in the general flux of words and deeds around town, and something of a moodily romantic figure within the dun Australian literary scene, his name inevitably conjuring perhaps that best known image of him, bow-tie askew, lipstick-smeared, grinning cheerfully, at the wheel of his 1957 Jaguar D-type, El Cid. Born in Sydney in 1949 he works at the Australian Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide where he runs the Dark Horsey bookshop & edits Little Esther books.

    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • Starting At Basheer's
    Ken Bolton
Starting At Basheer’s represents in part a determined ‘tightening up’ of the language and sentiment brought to the author’s work. In this book the author responds to growing tensions and growing animosities felt in Australian society: bleakly reductivist withdrawals of sympathy, and of automatic goodwill, are tested, examined and worked around. The poems have unusual virtues in...

  • A Whistled Bit of Bop
    Ken Bolton
Ken Bolton's A Whistled Bit of Bop begins and ends with poems that embrace the abstract through collage - working with pre-existing materials, the initial selection often arbitrary. 'Double Trouble' deals with time and timing, art, friendship; closing the collection, 'Triumvirate' works with similar elements but in a context that is political and historical. Bolton acknowledges...
