Die Monographie ist einem charakteristischen Merkmal der Sprachwissenschaft des späten 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhunderts gewidmet: der Orientierung am Übergang von der Beschreibung der Sprache als System ('an sich und für sich') zur Betrachtung der Sprache als eine der ausdrucksstärksten Formen der Fixierung menschlichen Wissens über die Welt und über sich selbst, d.h. der Sprache als 'Teil des Menschen'. Dies drückte sich in Versuchen aus, sprachliche Einheiten in einem breiten kulturellen Kontext zu betrachten - unter dem Aspekt der Beteiligung der Sprache an der Schaffung der geistigen Kultur und der Beteiligung der geistigen Kultur an der Bildung der Sprache.
