Infolge der Industrialisierung und Verstädterung wird die weiche Bodenbedeckung auf der Erdoberfläche durch wenig reflektierende künstliche Materialien ersetzt. Die Schwankungen der Oberflächentemperatur werden durch diese Veränderungen der Bodenbedeckung stark beeinflusst. Die Vor-Ort-Messung der Landoberflächentemperatur (LST) ist zeitaufwändig und eine wichtige Aufgabe. Daher schlagen die Wissenschaftler vor, die Landoberflächentemperatur mit Hilfe von Fernerkundungstechniken zu ermitteln. Satellitenbilder sind die Schlüsselelemente, die zur Ermittlung der LST sowie zur Feststellung von Veränderungen der Oberflächenbedeckung verwendet werden. Anhand der abgeleiteten LST-Werte können städtische Wärmeinseln in einem bestimmten Gebiet extrahiert werden. In diesem Buch werden die Methoden beschrieben, die zur Ermittlung von LST-Werten, Wärmeinselgebieten und zur Erstellung von Wärmerisikokarten unter Verwendung von Satellitenbildern verwendet werden können.
