En los últimos años, el estudio de la evolución de los discursos y las prácticas psiquiátricas durante el franquismo se ha convertido en un capítulo relevante de la historiografía de la ciencia. A pesar de que dicha evolución se desplegó en coordenadas cambiantes y comprendió aspectos muy dispares (como el cultivo de la especulación clínico-teórica, la introducción de novedades terapéuticas, el afianzamiento institucional de la especialidad o la difusión del nuevo ideario de la salud mental), en el franquismo la medicina mental se vio particularmente condicionada por el marco sociopolítico reinante. Considerando los principales ejes en torno a los que fue articulándose la dimensión política y social de la psiquiatría a lo largo de los cuarenta años de dictadura (la ideología, la doctrina, el gobierno, la gestión y la ciudadanía), la presente monografía ofrece una nueva interpretación de conjunto de la peculiar constelación psicopolítica de la España de Franco como una compleja y proteica amalgama de reaccionarismo, conservadurismo, totalitarismo, autoritarismo, tecnocracia y (finalmente) desbordamiento cívico.
