'Les Contemplations', a differenza delle altre opere di Victor Hugo, è una raccolta di poesie più personale e lirica. L’autore vi appare con le sue debolezze, le sue paure e le sue lotte quotidiane. È allo stesso tempo il padre affranto, il filosofo angosciato e l’amante tormentato. In altre parole, ogni riga ritrae uno stato d’animo in perenne lotta, dove le pulsioni vitali (Eros) sono strettamente legate alle fantasie mortifere (Thanatos). La teoria psicoanalitica è quindi altamente applicabile alla penna del poeta perché ci permette di affermare che non esiste una letteratura felice.
