La búsqueda del desarrollo ha sido una constante en los países de América Latina en general y en Argentina en particular desde mediados del siglo XX. Distintas estrategias se han implementado para avanzar en este objetivo, pero los resultados han sido poco exitosos. El presente libro presenta un análisis de las diferentes estrategias de desarrollo desplegadas a lo largo de la historia en la región y de los límites que presentaron las mismas, poniendo particular atención en la configuración del Estado y su forma de implicación. Reconoce, durante el periodo examinado, la conformación de estructurales estatales monstruosas, con rasgos asimilables a Escila y Caribdis (dos monstruos marinos de la mitología griega), que han atentado contra la posibilidad de impulsar un proceso de transformación estructural que, sobre la base de un sector manufacturero de base endógena, complejo y dinámico, permita salir de posicionamientos periféricos. Destaca que estas configuraciones estatales no son resultado de un mal diseño institucional, sino producto de disputas entre las distintas fuerzas sociales que operan en la escena socioeconómica y política. Por lo tanto, plantea la importancia, y presenta la necesidad, de avanzar en la conformación de fuerzas sociales que tengan como objetivo configurar un aparato estatal que impulse el desenvolvimiento del sector manufacturero de un modo tal que habilite procesos de transformación estructural y viabilice el desarrollo de los países de la región. 10
