La edad de la inocencia, célebre novela de Edith Wharton publicada en 1920, fue galardonada en 1921 con el Premio Pulitzer. En esta obra, la autora retrata la alta sociedad neoyorquina de la década de 1870. Durante mucho tiempo fue la novela más solicitada en bibliotecas públicas y un best seller en librerías. Edith Wharton nos coloca un eje de tres personajes muy bien definidos y diferenciados: el prometedor abogado perteneciente a una de las grandes familias de Nueva York Newland Archer, prometido con la dulce y conservadora May Welland, a su vez prima de la condesa Olenska, recién llegada de Europa tras separarse de un oscuro e infiel noble polaco. Newland Archer se presenta en un primer momento como un hombre consciente de haber tenido una moral dudosa (“como corresponde a cualquier hombre de su tiempo”) pero crítico con la alta sociedad que le rodea, con su hipocresía y cinismo y por ello decidido a actuar noblemente con su futura mujer, hasta que su enamoramiento de la condesa Olenska hace tambalearse los cimientos de sus principios morales y sociales.En el fondo de esta extraordinaria historia de una gran pasión subyace el conflicto entre dos mundos: el de las viejas familias “patricias” norteamericanas y el de los nuevos ricos, quienes, al terminar la novela, se han apoderado ya de las costumbres y de los espíritus.
