La acción de La dama de blanco (1860) se desarrolla en Limmeridge, adonde Walter Hartright se traslada para dar clases de dibujo a Laura, una joven rica heredera sobrina del barón Frederick Fairlie. Desde el principio Hartright se siente atraído por Laura, quien ha concertado matrimonio con sir Percival Glyde, un personaje cuyo único objetivo es arrebatarle su herencia. Cuando está a punto de marcharse de Limmeridge, Walter se encuentra con una misteriosa mujer vestida de blanco que le habla de la casa y de su propietaria fallecida, la señora Fairlie. La novela está inspirada en un hecho real y se publicó por entregas en la revista literaria All the Year Round, dirigida por Charles Dickens.
