Heute nimmt die Nanotechnologie einen besonderen Platz in der Entwicklung des menschlichen Wissens ein, und die Entdeckungen auf dem Gebiet der Nanotechnologie verleihen den Wissenschaften der Physik und Chemie neues Leben. Nanowissenschaft und -technologie ist die Fähigkeit, Materie in Nanometerdimensionen zu beherrschen und die Eigenschaften und Phänomene dieser Dimension in modernen Materialien, Werkzeugen und Systemen zu nutzen, und ist in der Tat ein neuer Ansatz bei der Herstellung von Produkten, die der Mensch braucht. Es scheint, dass die Nanowissenschaft und die damit verbundenen Wissenschaften nicht neu sind. Seit Hunderten von Jahren verwenden Chemiker Techniken, die den heutigen Nanotechniken nicht unähnlich sind. Die Entwicklung der Nanowissenschaft zu ihrer heutigen Form begann mit Faradays Entdeckung der kolloidalen Lösung von Gold im Jahr 1857, und 1959 schlug Feynman die Idee des 'großen Raums auf niedriger Ebene' für die Arbeit mit Materialien im Nanomaßstab vor. Der Begriff Nanotechnologie wurde erstmals von Taniguchi geprägt, und in den 1980er Jahren wurde die Idee von Dr. Drexler weiter erforscht.
