Krebs ist weltweit eine der häufigsten Todesursachen. In Indien ist Krebs die zweithäufigste Todesursache und nimmt jährlich um 11 Prozent zu. Von den insgesamt 58 Millionen Todesfällen weltweit im Jahr 2005 sind 7,6 Millionen auf Krebs zurückzuführen. Die Zahl der krebsbedingten Todesfälle wird voraussichtlich weiter steigen: 2015 werden schätzungsweise 9 Millionen Menschen an Krebs sterben, 2030 werden es 11,4 Millionen sein. Die Belastung durch Krebs hat sich zwischen 1975 und 2000 weltweit verdoppelt. Schätzungen zufolge wird sie sich bis 2020 erneut verdoppeln und bis 2030 fast verdreifachen. In diesem Buch haben wir versucht, einen umfassenden Überblick über die Bedrohung durch Krebs, die verschiedenen Phasen von Krebs, die Rolle von Genen und Retroviren bei der Verschlimmerung von Krebs im heutigen Szenario und den Paradigmenwechsel bei der Entdeckung neuerer zielgerichteter Moleküle für Krebserkrankungen zu geben.
