Nach der Kolonialisierung durch Mussolinis Italien wurde Libyen nach dem Krieg von den Vereinten Nationen als das ärmste Land der Welt eingestuft. Tatsächlich waren 94% seiner Bevölkerung Analphabeten, es gab keine Ärzte und 40% der Kinder starben bei der Geburt. Das Land war völlig abhängig. Die Versorgung wurde zu 100 % von den Amerikanern übernommen. Die Monarchie von König Idriss I. hatte eine korrupte pro-amerikanische Bourgeoisie und ein hungerndes Volk hervorgebracht, das in unhygienischen Slums zusammengepfercht war. Am Abend des 31.08.1969 übernahm eine Gruppe von einem Dutzend Offizieren, darunter ein 27-jähriger Hauptmann - Moammar El Qaddafi - Sohn eines Beduinenpaares, die Macht, indem sie die Abwesenheit des Königs ausnutzten. Neun Tage später wurde er zum Oberst befördert und verlas im Radio das erste Kommuniqué des neuen Regimes: 'In Kenntnis der unaufhörlichen Forderungen des Volkes, dem reaktionären, rückständigen und dekadenten Regime ein Ende zu setzen'. So entsteht 'die Herrschaft' von Oberst Qaddafi (Gaddafi)....
