Set in the Black Hills of the 1880s, but ranging from Fort Laramie to the Devil’s Tower, the story concerns three problems. The first is the theft of Winchester Rifles intended as replacements for the old breech loaders of Cavalry units on western frontier posts. The second is the discovery of a series of bodies, each with a silver dollar placed on an eye, and each connected in some way to the missing rifles. The third problem is that of a Cavalry Lieutenant Colonel (Jake Cutter) assigned to Army Intelligence and a Secret Service Agent from Washington (Anna Weysmith). Their partnership is not of their choice, but they were given no choice. Now they must overcome their initial hostility and stay alive while they solve the mysteries. The problem is, they, themselves, have become primary targets for assassination, and must divide their time between evading their pursuers and getting to the bottom of the troubles. The story involves military units, Indian tribes, and Washington politicians. And in the midst of it all is an unknown killer who leaves bodies strewn about for reasons unknown to anyone. 3
