The Holy Spirit takes John Greenberg on supernatural journeys that reveal hidden things that compel him to pray earnestly. He intercedes for his neighbor; however, he doesn’t realize the effectiveness of his prayers, leaving him frustrated. God takes him on other journeys that reveal larger evils, but he lacks the ability to pray effectively for those evils. He understands he has to hear from the Holy Spirit better, but numerous obstacles prevent him from learning to listen. Evil strikes back at him, his family, and his church. John is expelled from his church and later thrown in jail. While in jail he realizes his biggest obstacle to hearing from the Holy Spirit is his lack of patience, which an abundance of idle time helps him acquire. In the end, John concludes that if he wants to pray effectively, the most important thing is to hear from the Holy Spirit what He wants prayed.
