La recherche contemporaine sur le thème de l’identité des apprenants d’anglais apparaît de plus en plus dans la littérature nationale et internationale comme un vaste champ d’investigation, issu des études de Norton Peirce (1995), Bauman (2005), parmi d’autres auteurs post-structuralistes. Ces auteurs fondent leurs études sur Hall (2006), qui considère l’identité comme étant en construction et fragmentée, et sur les investissements de Norton Peirce (1995). Ainsi, cette étude a cherché à comprendre comment les expériences par rapport à la langue ont eu un impact sur les processus identitaires des participants, et quels investissements ils ont fait pour atteindre les communautés imaginées qu’ils souhaitaient obtenir dans la langue cible. L’analyse des données a permis d’étudier et de comprendre le processus d’identification des apprenants d’anglais, sur la base de leurs récits, ainsi que les investissements qu’ils ont réalisés pour s’approprier la langue.
