A integração económica regional é o processo de união de vários países na mesma área geográfica para criar uma zona económica única. Trata-se de uma opção económica liberal que favorece a integração económica dos Estados através de várias regras de mercado. Uma zona de integração económica foi considerada em vários escritos como uma fonte de crescimento económico devido aos vários efeitos do comércio livre.Com base em vários modelos de integração, o mundo inteiro foi subdividido em vários 'blocos regionais', dos quais a União Económica Europeia é um exemplo. De acordo com a teoria da integração económica desenvolvida por Bela Balassa em 1961, o processo de integração passa por cinco fases principais: A criação de uma Zona de Comércio Livre (ZCL), o estabelecimento de uma União Aduaneira (UA), a criação de um Mercado Comum (MC), a criação de uma União Económica (UE), e a fase final que é a criação de uma União Económica e Monetária (UEM).
