Foram realizados estudos sobre o conhecimento indígena no tratamento da febre tifoide e infecções de feridas utilizando o extrato de folhas da planta Calotropis procera. As folhas foram arrancadas e secas ao ar até obterem um peso constante, pulverizadas com quatro solventes diferentes: aquoso, n.hexano, etanol e metanol. Duzentos e cinquenta gramas da amostra seca e pulverizada foram pesados para cada extração por solvente e foram obtidos 28,50±1,00 (g), 12,30±1,00 (g), 16,40±1,0 (g) e 22,60±1,00 (g) com peso correspondente de isolados puros fraccionados do extrato obtido por cromatografia em coluna de 13,00±1,00, 7,20±1,00, 8,80±1,00 e 10,30±1,00 (ml). Os resultados da análise fitoquímica revelaram os componentes activos mais elevados de taninos, saponinas, alcalóides, flavonóides, glicosídeos cardíacos e terpenóides nos extractos metanólicos, ao passo que o açúcar redutor, o fenol e os flobataninos estavam ausentes. Utilizando métodos de difusão em ágar, os diferentes extractos brutos mostraram um efeito visível nos organismos de teste em comparação com os isolados puros fraccionados dos extractos e o controlo positivo. Observou-se que os extractos metanólicos eram mais potentes do que outros extractos de solventes nas bactérias testadas.
