O mundo em desenvolvimento está a passar por uma importante transição demográfica de uma sociedade rural e agrária para uma sociedade urbana e industrial (ONU, 2001). A migração da população em crescimento para as áreas construídas está a conduzir a alterações na utilização e ocupação do solo (LULC) sob a forma de urbanização em todo o mundo (ONU, 2008). A alteração do LULC é uma preocupação importante, uma vez que tem tendência para desequilibrar várias componentes do ciclo hidrológico. Compreender o efeito da alteração do LULC é muito importante para o desenvolvimento de recursos hídricos sustentáveis. O objetivo deste livro é fornecer uma abordagem perspicaz do impacto a longo prazo da alteração do LULC no escoamento superficial. Com o advento da tecnologia RS & GIS, tornou-se mais fácil para os hidrólogos lidar com processos hidrológicos de grande escala, complexos e espacialmente distribuídos. Este livro aborda a avaliação da mudança de LULC e também o seu potencial impacto no escoamento superficial através do modelo L-THIA baseado em SIG. O L-THIA, que requer um esforço modesto para preparar os dados de entrada, estima o escoamento superficial pelo método SCS-CN. Este estudo produz uma ferramenta eficaz para os hidrólogos no planeamento e gestão dos recursos hídricos.
