Enzymes and whole cells are able to catalyze the most complex chemical processes under the most benign experimental and environmental conditions. In this way, enzymes and cells could be excellent catalysts for a much more sustainable chemical industry. However, enzymes and cells also have some limitations for nonbiological applications: fine chemistry, food chemistry, analysis, therapeutics, and so on. Enzymes and cells may be unstable, difficult to handle under nonconventional conditions, poorly selective toward synthetic substrates, and so forth. From this point of view, the transformation-from the laboratory to industry-of chemical processes catalyzed by enzymes and cells may be one of the most complex and exciting goals in biotechnology. For many industrial applications, enzymes and cells have to be immobilized, via very simple and cost-effective protocols, in order to be re-used over very long periods of time. From this point of view, immobilization, simplicity, and stabilization have to be strongly related concepts. Over the last 30 years, a number of protocols for the immobilization of cells and enzymes have been reported in scientific literature. However, only very few protocols are simple and useful enough to greatly improve the functional properties of enzymes and cells, activity, stability, selectivity, and related properties.

The most essential aspects of human life, almost all over the world are energy and environment. On the side of energy, conventional sources that are meeting the demand will not last longer. Therefore, the immediate solution for such crises is utilizing non- conventional, alternative and renewable resources. These resources are to be explored for this purpose. Present day situat...

RNA performs a broad range of vital cellular functions. They serve as information carriers, form part of ribosome, exhibit catalytic activities, involved in gene regulation, etc. Most of these functions involve the interaction of RNAs with proteins. For example, the genetic information contained in DNA is transcribed to RNA assisted by RNA polymerase, the ribosome contains tRNA...

For centuries, medicine aimed to treat abnormalities. But today normality itself is open to medical modification. Equipped with a new molecular understanding of bodies and minds, and new techniques for manipulating basic life processes at the level of molecules, cells, and genes, medicine now seeks to manage human vital processes. The Politics of Life Itself offers a much-neede...

The fine balance in reactive species (RS) levels inside the cell, or redox homeostasis, is crucial for normal life. RS are molecules such as hydroxyl, superoxide, and others whose reaction rates are typically high. Further, RS are now accepted as the molecular mediators of stresses on cells. RS are also implicated in many diseases including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and ...
