La production de produits chimiques et de carburants à partir de matériaux lignocellulosiques a suscité un intérêt particulier de la part des chercheurs en raison de l’impact négatif des combustibles fossiles sur l’environnement et de l’inquiétude croissante suscitée par les problèmes géopolitiques liés au pétrole dans le monde. Les recherches actuelles montrent que la production d’éthanol de deuxième génération à partir de matériaux lignocellulosiques est une technologie alternative. La fibre de sisal est une matière lignocellulosique composée essentiellement de cellulose (58 %), d’hémicellulose (15 %) et de lignine (11 %), ce qui en fait une alternative pour la production d’éthanol de deuxième génération dans le nord-est du Brésil, car il s’agit d’une culture ayant une teneur considérable en hydrates de carbone qui peuvent être dégradés en sucres fermentescibles.
