The doors to the waiting room opened with agliding ease. No wonder why healthcare was so damn expensive, Mary thought as she walked into the brightly lit box. Made her feel like a cat with expensive luxuries waiting for someone to verify her existence. She was there to verify that John had seemingly driven off the side of the road (how could he have been so careless? John?, her John?). But who was there to verify whether or not Mary had lived through the news? Maybe this was Beserel’s story after all. How she found her mother dead in the bathroom sopping wet from slit wrists and tears. Maybe all of us are just waiting for someone else to tell us we’re dead; cats in a box waiting to be let out.
