A habitação social é de extrema importância para milhares de brasileiros proporcionarem a segurança de sua família, em especial, as mulheres chefes de família. Em uma breve retrospectiva histórica, destaca-se a relevância da habitação social no Brasil e em Mato Grosso. Nessa retrospectiva foi identificado um número significativo de programas habitacionais que surgiram ao longo dos anos até os programas disponíveis à época do levantamento.Estudos relacionados à habitação, em especial suas funções e sua área mínima, foram resgatados, visando estabelecer um referencial teórico para os critérios de análise da qualidade.Com foco no objetivo de instrumentar o profissional na análise e concepção de projetos de unidades habitacionais de interesse social, foi realizado um levantamento de vários métodos de avaliação da qualidade, com destaque ao Método de Pedro, de Portugal. Esse método é amplo, pois considera vários aspectos de qualidade como, por exemplo, conforto ambiental, urbanismo e a unidade habitacional.Para o caso brasileiro, foi feita a adaptação do método de Pedro, utilizando dados da norma brasileira de desempenho, a NBR 15.575. O método adaptado foi aplicado a 36 plantas de casas construídas nas duas maiores cidades de Mato Grosso.O projeto de habitação social é complexo com várias partes interessadas a atender com objetivos antagônicos, em especial, o custo. Apresentamos uma comparação entre a qualidade e os custos associados e o resultado surpreende. 10
