It was September 1947 when Jackie found the old brown suitcase on her bed, packed with a few clothes and her beloved toy rabbit. Gran informed her she was going to residential school and they’d be leaving right away. Six-year-old Jackie had got used to living with Gran in her little ground-floor flat. She’d lived there for the last few months, ever since Gran came to fetch her. Dad had left in the middle of the night as a violent storm raged.
