Germinal by Émile Zola (1885) is a powerful novel about class struggle, poverty, and the harsh realities of coal mining in 19th-century France.The story follows Étienne Lantier, an unemployed mechanic who arrives at a mining town and finds work in the coal pits of Montsou. He witnesses the brutal exploitation of miners, who endure grueling labor, starvation wages, and unsafe conditions while the wealthy mine owners live in comfort.
