À l’heure actuelle, il existe très peu d’études sur l’œuvre El Sexto de José María Arguedas. Les études qui ont été réalisées se sont concentrées sur d’autres œuvres de cet auteur, de Cornejo Polar, Lienhard et Vargas Llosa, entre autres. Les lectures de El Sexto effectuées jusqu’à présent ont eu tendance à se concentrer sur les problèmes liés au contexte social du Pérou des années 1930. Des auteurs comme Antonio Melis et William Rowe vont jusqu’à affirmer que l’ensemble de l’œuvre d’Ardent contient un sens politique profond. Sur la base de ce qui précède, j’essaierai d’offrir une lecture différente de celles mentionnées ci-dessus. Grâce à elle, il sera possible d’observer que l’auteur emprunte une voie différente de celle qui consiste à essayer de préserver une culture archaïque ou à revenir à une utopie. Je dirai que El Sexto tente de rendre compte de ce qu’Arguedas lui-même a dit un jour : '... la division du pays en deux univers, deux mondes totalement différents', et c’est précisément ainsi que la prison de El Sexto est divisée, symboliquement. Le problème se pose précisément lorsqu’Arguedas fait en sorte que ces deux mondes, si hétérogènes, si différents et inaccessibles, parviennent à se toucher.
