Devido à fraca solubilidade e absorção de drogas, muitos candidatos a drogas ficam aquém das expectativas. Os métodos auto-emulsificantes de administração de fármacos aumentam a solubilidade e a biodisponibilidade de medicamentos pouco solúveis. Quando os SEDDS são adicionados a uma fase aquosa e suavemente misturados, formam-se emulsões finas de óleo na água. Os SEDDS vêm em cápsulas de gelatina macia ou dura para administração oral e formam emulsões finas e estáveis de óleo em água. SEDDS são fabricados principalmente como formulações líquidas, que têm pouca estabilidade e mobilidade, baixa carga de drogas, um número limitado de opções de dosagem, precipitação irreversível de drogas/excipientes, e uma elevada proporção (30-60%) de surfactantes que podem irritar o sistema gastrointestinal. O SEDDS sólido tem sido estudado para evitar os problemas do SEDDS líquido. A adsorção de formulações líquidas auto-micro-emulsionadas em portadores sólidos é uma das melhores formas de criar pós de fluxo livre para compressão em forma de comprimidos (SMET).
