Dobre właściwości mechaniczne i niski koszt tworzyw petrochemicznych spowodowały, że w ostatnich latach intensywnie stosuje się tworzywa syntetyczne pochodzenia petrochemicznego. Niestety gospodarka odpadami powstałymi w wyniku ich użytkowania stanowi drażliwy problem. W celu rozwiązania tego problemu stosuje się kilka sposobów: recykling polimerów syntetycznych, zakopywanie i/lub spalanie tych ostatnich na składowiskach odpadów oraz wdrażanie zastępczych polimerów biodegradowalnych. Nasza praca skupia się na tej ostatniej drodze, która chroni środowisko. Chodzi o opracowanie biodegradowalnej folii z tworzywa sztucznego poprzez połączenie biopolimerów chitozanu i skrobi maniokowej, przy czym ten ostatni może obniżyć koszty produkcji materiału i poprawić właściwości tego pierwszego, oraz o zaproponowanie studium wykonalności technicznej i finansowej urządzenia do produkcji folii z tworzywa sztucznego na skalę przemysłową. Przeprowadzono wiele badań nad chityną, która po celulozie jest najobficiej występującym polisacharydem na Ziemi. Chitozan pochodzi z deacetylacji chityny zawartej w skorupach stawonogów (krabów, itp.).
