Afrikaanse varkenspest, jaarlijkse griepvirussen en pandemieën van het coronavirus zijn het gevolg van ziekten bij dieren die ook op mensen kunnen overgaan.Zwevende vochtdruppeltjes (aërosol) zijn 0,5-10 micrometer lang. Een persoon die met bacterie of virus besmette positieve vochtdruppeltjes inneemt, inademt of anderszins wordt blootgesteld, kan worden blootgesteld aan honderden of duizenden bacterie of virusdeeltjes, wat de kans op infectie vergroot.Ademhalingsdruppels kunnen worden overgedragen door hoesten, niezen, contact met besmette oppervlakken of via ingeademde zwevende ademhalingsdruppels (aërosol). Daarom moet elk individu passende maatregelen nemen om bij het gevaar van besmetting de eigen blootstelling aan deze deeltjes te verminderen.
