Negli ultimi anni, l’importanza attribuita ai biocarburanti a livello mondiale è aumentata drasticamente, a causa dell’avanzare del riscaldamento globale e dell’aumento del prezzo del petrolio. La produzione di biocarburanti convenzionali, tuttavia, incontra ostacoli nel raggiungere i livelli desiderati, il che rappresenta un forte incentivo ad adottare nuove tecnologie. Il settore brasiliano dello zucchero e dell’alcol ha attirato l’interesse di diversi Paesi grazie all’elevata resa e ai bassi costi di produzione dello zucchero e dell’alcol, con la canna da zucchero come materia prima utilizzata in questo settore. L’etanolo è una fonte stimata di energia pulita e rinnovabile ed è il biocarburante più utilizzato al mondo, sia in forma pura che come additivo alla benzina. Durante la produzione industriale di etanolo, uno dei fattori limitanti del processo è lo stress causato ai lieviti, principalmente dalle alte concentrazioni di zucchero ed etanolo presenti nel mosto. In questo studio, utilizzando diversi approcci, abbiamo cercato di aumentare la tolleranza del lievito industriale CAT-1 per resistere ai fattori di stress incontrati nel processo industriale brasiliano.
